Illinois Pharmacy Technician Requirements

How to become a pharmacy technician in Illinois

Pharmacy Technician:

  1. Must be 16 years of age or older
  2. High school diploma or equivalent or currently enrolled in high school
  3. Pharmacy Technician License through the Illinois Board of Pharmacy: fill out application and pay license fee
  4. Certification is required within 2 years.

Certified Pharmacy Technician:

  1. Must be 18 years of age
  2. High school diploma or equivalent or currently enrolled in high school
  3. Pharmacy Technician License through the Illinois Board of Pharmacy: fill out application and pay license fee
  4. Successfully complete pharmacy technician training through:
    • An approved nationally recognized accrediting body
    • -OR-
    • On-the-job training through the Pharmacist-in-Charge of the pharmacy where you are employed
  5. Successful completion of an examination accredited by the National Organization for Competency Assurance (PTCB is accredited)
